Fr. Dave's Take On It 9/24/17
For many years I have had a fear of someone under my bed at night so I went to a psychiatrist and told him. “I’ve got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s someone under it. I’m scared. I think I’m going crazy.” “Just put yourself into my hands for one year,” said the doctor. “Come and talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.” “How much do you charge?” I inquired. “$150 per visit,” replied the shrink. That seemed like a lot of money so I told him that I would sleep on it. Six months later I bumped into the doctor on the street. He asked, “Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you to come in?” “Well,” I told him, “$150 three times a week for a year is a lot of money. A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money I went out and bought myself a new pickup truck!” “Is that so?” the psychiatrist said with some indignation, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?” “Well,” I answered, “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain’t nobody under there now!”
As we gather at the Ice Arena this weekend, hopefully none of us is afraid that there’s someone under the bleachers. With those and all of our trepidations set aside, I trust that our experience will be wonderful—all of us together praising our Good and Gracious God! Welcome to one and all and thanks to all those who have had a hand in the planning and facilitating of this event. We appreciate your efforts on our behalf very much.
The Gospel this weekend reminds us that our God shares a generosity that goes beyond what we human beings would consider fair and just. Nothing is too much and no one is unworthy of receiving the whole promise, since we can’t earn God’s love - it is just freely given to anyone who asks. So let us open our hearts to the grace of this moment and feel the love being poured out into our hearts. And when we go “back to normal” next weekend, may we take with us the memories of a blessed experience!
